Newt Gingrich Newt Gingrich Newt Gingrich Newton Leroy Gingrich, Ph.D., served as the Speaker of the United States House of Representatives from 1995 to 1999. A college history professor, neoconservative and prolific author, Gingrich twice ran unsuccessfully for the House before first winning a seat in November 1978. He was re-elected 10 times. He has expressed interest in being a candidate for the 2008 Republican nomination for the Presidency.
